The same face on a different background serves a different purpose. Pick the wrong colour and the paperwork comes back, costing at least a day.
1. White: the most common default
ID cards, social security cards, health insurance cards, driving licences, passports, visas (in most countries), civil service exams and teacher certification all expect white. It looks the most formal and is the default requirement in most online systems. If you only keep one photo ready, keep it white.
2. Blue: education and work
Diplomas, degree certificates, CVs, staff badges, professional qualifications and some visas commonly use blue. There are two shades: darker blue reads more formal, lighter blue feels friendlier, and CVs often look better on light blue. Photos taken by schools in bulk are usually blue.
3. Red: specific certificates and festive occasions
Marriage certificates, health insurance cards in some regions, senior citizen cards and some internal personnel files use red. Red is the fussiest about clothing: red or orange clothes blend into the background, so switch to dark formal wear.
4. Changing the background beats retaking the photo
If you already have a compliant photo, change the ID photo background keeps the pose, hair, expression and pixel dimensions, replacing only the background pixels. It saves a trip to the studio and the fee. The tool segments the person first, then fills the colour, with edge feathering to avoid a hard white outline.
5. Three details when swapping backgrounds
- Hair edges: fine strands are where fringing and leftover background colour appear. Choose the "fine" mode so the model runs alpha matting for cleaner edges.
- Dark clothes on white: collars and shoulders can look dirty. Lift the brightness slightly after the swap, or pick blue instead.
- Semi-transparent materials: glasses frames and sheer fabric show the old background through them. If the model cannot handle it, use another original photo or dark opaque clothing.
6. Two more things to align
First, pixel dimensions: 1-inch is 295x413 and 2-inch is 413x626, and many portals validate them. Second, file size: 20-100 KB is typical. The ID photo size chart lists the full set; after changing the background, compress to the target size again.
