PNG Compress · What it does

PNG has two uses: transparent icons/screenshots use lossless mode (only redundant metadata is removed, pixels unchanged); non-transparent photo PNGs can use lossy mode to 8-bit indexed color or JPG, cutting 70%+. Both modes are on one page with live before/after.

FAQ

Is lossless truly lossless?

Yes. Lossless only cleans redundant data and optimizes encoding—pixels and alpha unchanged.

Does lossy mode drop transparency?

No—alpha is always kept; lossy only affects color quantization.

Why does PNG→JPG turn the background black?

JPG has no transparency and fills it black—keep PNG instead.
