WeChat images: sizes and compression for official accounts, Moments and chats

Official-account cover 900×383, body images 1080px wide, how to split a Moments grid, why chat images look blurry… This article collects WeChat's size and size-limit rules per scenario with compression tips.

Compression Tips Author tdd8.cn

The same image loses half its headline on an official account cover, looks soft in Moments, and turns into mosaic in a chat window -- all because the size and compression rules do not match.

1. Official account cover: 900x383 is the baseline

The lead article cover is best at 900x383 (about 2.35:1); secondary articles use a 200x200 square. WeChat crops automatically on upload, so keep the headline, faces and logo inside the safe area, leaving 10% on each side. Cropping to 2.35:1 with image cropping before uploading is far more predictable than letting the backend do it.

2. Body images: 1080 px wide is enough

The article container is about 677 px wide, which on a 3x screen would need 2031 px to be "absolutely sharp" -- in practice 1080 px is indistinguishable and half the size. Use 1080 px wide, JPG quality 85, under 200 KB each and under 2 MB for the whole article; pages open noticeably faster.

3. Moments grid: crop to squares first

Each cell of the nine-grid is displayed as a square, so landscape photos lose their sides. Crop to 1:1 with the important content centred. Order follows the selection order, so pick in the sequence you want displayed.

4. Why chat images get blurry

WeChat recompresses anything that is not sent as "original", capping the long edge around 1080 px and lowering quality. To keep detail, tick "original" when sending. To save data without wrecking quality, resize to 1600 px wide yourself first -- your compression is controllable, theirs is not.

5. A universal processing order

  • Crop to the target ratio (cover 2.35:1, grid 1:1, body as needed);
  • Resize to the target width (900 for covers, 1080 for body);
  • Compress to a size limit (compress to a target KB, under 200 KB for body images);
  • For batches, drop the folder into resize and export at one spec.

Do not reverse the order: compressing then resizing encodes twice and stacks up quality loss.

6. Images that should not be JPG

Logos with transparency, text posters on flat colour and screenshots meant to be zoomed are safer as PNG or WebP. JPG adds coloured noise around letter edges, which is very visible at small sizes.

FAQ

Must the WeChat cover be exactly 900×383?

That's the recommended size; the 2.35:1 ratio matters more. Crop to ratio before uploading to avoid re-cropping.

What size for body images?

1080px wide and under 200KB each is the most balanced choice.

Does compression hurt WeChat reach?

No. Load speed affects read-through rate; smaller images usually help.
