Video to GIF: how to set frame rate, size and file weight

The most common video-to-GIF failure is a tens-of-MB file you can't send. This article uses concrete numbers to show how frame rate, width and duration combine to set GIF size, with different presets for chat emojis vs tutorial clips.

GIF size is decided almost entirely by three factors: width x frame rate x duration. Double any one and the file roughly doubles; change all three and the difference is cubic.

1. Decide the use, then the numbers

  • Chat sticker: 240-320 px wide, 10-12 fps, up to 3 seconds -- usually under 1 MB.
  • Article illustration or how-to loop: 480-640 px wide, 10 fps, 4-6 seconds, kept around 2-3 MB.
  • Product demo: 720 px wide, 12-15 fps, but cut it short -- anything over 8 seconds is hard to use on a web page.

Video to GIF lets you set width and frame rate separately. Starting from the original resolution at 30 fps is the direct cause of oversized files.

2. Higher frame rate is not better

GIF has no motion compensation, so 15 fps already reads as smooth; above 24 fps the size grows quickly while the perceived improvement is small. Below 8 fps motion becomes visibly steppy, especially with a panning camera.

3. Duration is the easiest switch

A 20-second screen recording can become a 15 MB GIF. Cut it to the 5-second key moment and the file drops to a quarter while carrying more information. Cut first, tune second -- far more effective than compressing afterwards.

4. You can still compress an existing GIF

If all you have is one large GIF, use GIF compression: take the palette from 256 to 128 or even 64 (usually invisible) for 30-50%, then scale to 70% for another halving. Together, 10 MB down to 2 MB is common.

5. When GIF is the wrong format

Over 10 seconds, needing sound, or playing on mobile: MP4/WebM is a tenth of the size with better quality. GIF only wins on "plays anywhere, loops automatically, no controls" -- do not use it as a video.

FAQ

Does the GIF have sound?

No—GIF has no audio. Keep the video format if you need sound.

Can I pick a specific clip?

Currently the whole segment converts; trim it first if you need a clip, to avoid a useless large file.

Can a transparent video become a GIF?

Plain MP4 has no alpha; the GIF will have a background. For transparency compose from frames.
